Being Somewhere  2009

(Ten-minute preview of) 41-minute video produced during residency at Künstlerhäuser Worpswede, Germany. Based around the activity of repeatedly visiting the same, largely unchanging area of landscape, the video is structured into eight sections, each representing a separate day.

Initially motivated by a sense of novelty at discovering a new environment, the activity gradually loses all sense of purpose as the location steadfastly refuses to support the weight of my expectations. I am seen to perform a series of bizarre actions within the vast flat moorland, the arbitrariness of my behaviour only reinforced by my increasingly desperate attempts to project meaning into the activities, communicated in the form of a spoken narrative.

The work originally took the form of a blog charting my experiences of repeatedly venturing out into the landscape near Worpswede.

The work has been shown at Artsway Open 09 at Artsway, Sway, Hampshire, UK in 2009/2010 (reviewed in a-n magazine); Die Kunst der Natur ist die Natur der Kunst [The Art of Nature is the Nature of Art] at Künstlerverein Walkmühle, Wiesbaden, Germany in 2010; The Box at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, UK in 2010; Blows to the Temple at Atelierhof Kreuzberg, Berlin in 2012; and Stranded Travelers at Atelier 35, Bucharest, Romania in 2013.
