The Wisdom of Solomon
The
story of the wise judge who identifies the true mother of a disputed child
by ordering that the child be cut in half is very widespread in world
folklore. Working from this initial idea of disputed identity and ownership
...
Instructions
Invited artists are requested to bring along to the venue a piece of work (a "made" piece of work is preferred
to an object trouve so as to maximise the sense of "ownership") of modest
size and weight - say under 50cm3 and weight max 10lbs. - of any subject
of the artists' choosing.
Choose one other artists' work to engage with (second, third etc. choices will
be necessary as the first choice may not be available on the day). All works
of art will be "cut" into two pieces with (and needs to be cut-able by)
one of the supplied tools - scissors, stanely knife, hacksaw, jigsaw,
tin snips - in the space at the agreed time by the artists themselves,
through a joint negotiation of each artist and the artist they end up
working with.
Each pair of artists will join together the two pieces of their halved art
works to produce a joint ownership complete work of art. This will be
displayed for the duration of the show in the space. The other half of
the divided works will be "swapped" within each artist pair (each artist
receiving the remaining half of the other artist's work). Each artist will
then have time to complete an artwork for display at a future event, ie. each
artist will "build" a new half for the work they have in order to produce another
joint ownership artwork. Two artworks will thus become three joint ownership/creation
artworks.
The final destination/ownership of all resulting dual production artworks
will be up to the artists involved to decide upon.
